Early intervention in psychosis team – information for carers

Carer’s assessment

Individuals who provide regular and substantial care for a person on enhanced levels of care will:

  • be offered an assessment of their caring, physical and mental health needs. This is repeated on an annual basis. This can be provided by the care coordinator, carer link, or Making Space
  • be offered a referral to Making Space
  • have their own written care plan which is given to them and implemented in discussion with them

Confidentiality

Confidentiality affects everyone. The Trust and staff have a responsibility for personal data. Any information you provide will be treated in confidence.

Some service users will request information about themselves to be withheld from relatives, carers and friends. This decision should be respected.

Staff will always get permission from a service user before any information about them is given out.

The role of the care co-ordinator

The care co-ordinator is a qualified mental health practitioner who offers support to service users and their relatives and/or carers.

Family work

Family work is a type of practical support, which aims to help families cope with the difficulties they face on a day-to-day basis. It involves a number of sessions where a family worker works together with a family to try to tackle any problems the family is facing.

Carer’s Education & Support Group

This is a regular meeting run by early intervention workers. The purpose of the group is to provide information about psychosis and the process of recovery. The meeting is also an opportunity to meet with other carers.

Outpatient reviews

Your relative/friend will be offered an appointment with the early intervention team psychiatrist annually or when necessary, depending on their needs. These appointments may be more frequent if needed.
